The YBT project launches SMART APP, a digital video-based tool that equips teachers and school staff to recognize the signs of giftedness—early, accurately, and without bias.

Identifying giftedness isn’t about test scores alone—it’s about recognizing potential in its many diverse and complex forms. With this vision, the YBT project, co-financed by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission, and led by partners from Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and Cyprus, is proud to introduce the SMART APP.

SMART APP is an innovative digital tool offering short, targeted educational videos that guide teachers, counselors, and other school professionals in learning how to spot cognitive, emotional, and social characteristics commonly seen in gifted students.

SMART APP is a video-based awareness tool that distills decades of research and field experience into a series of 1-minute, expert-led clips. Each video focuses on a key question:

  • How does giftedness manifest emotionally?
  • What classroom behaviors could indicate advanced ability?
  • How can teachers differentiate between giftedness and learning disorders?
  • What are the signs of twice-exceptionality?

The app allows users to explore specific dimensions—from early language development to abstract reasoning, from curiosity to frustration—all framed in a practical, observation-oriented style.

Each video is recorded by experts in their native languages and presented in a clean, multilingual interface, making the tool intuitive and inclusive for a wide range of educators across Europe.

Research and YBT survey data show that many gifted learners go undetected or misunderstood, especially when they:

  • Are from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Don’t fit the “high achiever” stereotype
  • Have twice-exceptional profiles (e.g., gifted + ADHD or dyslexia)
  • Struggle with social isolation or emotional regulation

Often, teachers are the first line of detection, but they lack the time, training, or tools to identify giftedness in its many forms. SMART APP fills that gap by providing just-in-time professional insight that’s quick, digestible, and rooted in real school life.

SMART APP isn’t just a collection of videos—it’s a structured learning experience that invites:

  • Reflection through targeted questions
  • Observation through classroom behavior clues
  • Dialogue between educators, families, and specialists
  • Action, by helping schools become more responsive and inclusive

The tool also links to key definitions, screening prompts, and optional guidelines for conducting informal teacher-parent interviews—all aligned with the larger diagnostic flow of YBT’s WP3 strategy.

SMART APP will be hosted on the YBT digital platform, accessible in multiple languages and promoted through targeted outreach in schools, VET institutions, and educational networks. It complements tools like SELF SCAN by helping educators deepen their awareness before, during, and after formal identification processes.

Stay tuned as we continue building the full ecosystem of tools to make gifted education more visible, equitable, and humane.
