Developed under the YBT project, SELF SCAN empowers teachers, counselors, and headmasters to assess their school’s capacity to identify, support, and include gifted learners—quickly, confidentially, and meaningfully.

Across Europe, schools are facing a critical question: Are we equipped to support gifted students?
Thanks to the YBT project, co-financed by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission, that question can now be answered—confidently and constructively—with the launch of SELF SCAN, an innovative self-assessment tool designed for use by school staff.

Developed collaboratively by experts in gifted education and piloted with educators from Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and Cyprus, the SELF SCAN is a web-based diagnostic platform that enables schools to take a clear, honest look at their strengths and gaps in supporting gifted learners.

SELF SCAN is not just another questionnaire. It’s a comprehensive screening tool that:

  • Offers tailored pathways for teachers, school counselors, and headmasters
  • Assesses practices across four key dimensions:
    1. School Culture around Giftedness
    2. Staff Training, Awareness & Comfort
    3. Identification Procedures
    4. Intervention Strategies & Resources
  • Provides automated scoring and a three-tier interpretation model (low–neutral–high)
  • Helps schools reflect on both systemic readiness and individual confidence

Rather than offering a binary yes/no judgment, SELF SCAN generates insightful diagnostic reports that help schools see where they are—and where they could go.

Findings from WP2 of the YBT project made one thing clear: while teachers and schools care deeply about their gifted learners, they often lack:

  • Consistent identification tools
  • Tailored support strategies
  • Training for twice-exceptionality and socio-emotional needs
  • A shared understanding of what giftedness really looks like in diverse classrooms

SELF SCAN was built to respond to these gaps—with flexibility, accessibility, and impact in mind.

SELF SCAN is now live and will be promoted through upcoming webinars, multiplier events, and workshops across partner countries. The results will feed into:

  • Tailored training for each user group (WP3)
  • Improved intervention strategies
  • Policy recommendations on how to embed gifted support in everyday school life

The goal? To help schools move from intuition to strategy, and from goodwill to impact.

The platform is free, fully anonymized, and multilingual—because every school should have the tools to see their gifted learners clearly and act decisively.
